Hope Initiative Alliance is an aggregator of charitable services committed to enriching the well-being of diverse communities in Singapore.

Our Story

Hope Initiative Alliance (HIA) is a registered charity in Singapore designated with the Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status.

Since its founding in 2018, HIA has been providing comprehensive care to marginalised individuals in Singapore, including citizens, residents, and migrant workers. Collaborating with public, civil, and private partners, HIA enhances the quality of life for those with diverse social welfare needs through charity services and alliances with various organizations and government agencies.

With the support of partners from the public, private, and civil sectors, HIA serves as an aggregator to provide services that improve the lives of people with diverse social welfare needs. In this regard, HIA works closely with over 100 social service organisations, civil society organisations, corporations, and government agencies.

HIA serves its beneficiaries through various movements that serve the following beneficiaries:

  • Children from lower-income families

  • Families living in rental housing

  • Homeless people and rough sleepers

  • Migrant workers living in dormitories

  • Migrant domestic workers

We are guided by our charity principles that nurture a cohesive society, embodying the spirit of a city of good. Together with our partners, we

  • Promote interfaith charity

  • Support corporate social responsibility

  • Champion community volunteerism

Our journey in Together in Improving Lives began in late 2018 when we partnered with the Far East Organisation to raise over S$1.7 million, benefiting 13 charity organisations in Singapore.

In October 2019, DPM Heng, the guest of honour this evening, officially launched the first social movement, which focused on migrant workers living in dormitories - the Alliance of Guest Workers Outreach (AGWO). This was just before we faced the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic a few months later when AGWO's charity work for migrant workers in dormitories became very important.

As a young organisation challenged with minimal resources and relying on volunteers and partners, we continued our charity mission during the pandemic. During the worst outburst of the pandemic, we distributed over one million meals and 1.2 million items to over 21,000 migrant workers in more than 300 factory-converted dormitories. Far exceeding our budgeted resources, we gave more than S$5 million worth of food and supplies to the migrant community in 2020 alone. Since then, till. now, we have continued to work very closely with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to serve over 20,000 migrant workers every year.

In the recent couple of years, we have also expanded our charity services by partnering with the Ministry of Social & Family Development (MSF) in their S3P program to serve 100 homeless individuals since 2020; and from 2022, we have also collaborated with their Social Service Offices (SSO) to support low-income families living in rental housing.

As an inter-racial, inter-religious and inter-cultural organisation, Hope Initiative Alliance (HIA) played an important role in ensuring that the spiritual needs of our workers were met. They organised congregational prayers and religious services for workers of different faiths in the dormitories and recreation centres. When workers were unable to return home during their festive holidays, HIA helped to spread cheer by distributing festive care packs and meals. Many of their volunteers came from Christian groups and I remember them coming together to deliver breakfast at 4am during Ramadan – at the height of the pandemic in 2020.
